Edible and industrial milk powder

Milk powder is one of the widely used dairy products, which is divided into two main categories: edible milk powder and industrial milk powder. These two types of powdered milk have differences in the production process, raw materials and applications, which are discussed below.

Industrial powdered milk is usually used in the production of food products such as ice cream, chocolate, sweets and bakery products, and it usually has a lot of protein and fat and is specially formulated for industrial use.

But powdered milk is designed for human consumption and is mostly used in feeding children and adults, and is used as a food supplement for babies and children, or in special diets for adults. It usually has a better ratio of protein, fat, and vitamins to meet nutritional needs.

Production stages of edible milk powder

  2. Pasteurization: In this step, milk is heated at high temperatures (usually 72°C for 15 seconds) to kill bacteria and germs.
  3. Evaporation: The pasteurized milk is transferred to the evaporation device, where the water is evaporated with the help of heat to increase the concentration of the milk. This process is usually carried out at temperatures below the boiling point.
  4. Drying: After evaporation, the condensed milk is sprayed into drying machines. In this method, condensed milk is turned into fine particles and exposed to hot air to completely evaporate its moisture.
  5. Packaging: Finally, the produced milk powder is placed in appropriate and hygienic packaging and sold to the market.

Stages of industrial milk powder production

The production of industrial powdered milk has the same steps as edible powdered milk, but it is usually done on a larger scale and with more advanced technologies:

  1. Selection and preparation of milk: The milk used for industrial production may include low-fat or thick milk and undergo more quality tests.
  2. Pasteurization and evaporation: As in the previous steps, milk is pasteurized and then evaporated and condensed simultaneously in industrial devices.
  3. Drying: The drying method in industrial milk powder may include more advanced methods such as drying using microwaves or vacuum processes that improve product quality.
  4. Quality control: In industrial production, quality control is carried out at all stages to ensure that the final product is free of any contamination and of good quality.

 

Differences between edible and industrial powdered milk

  1. Quality and application: powdered milk is mainly designed for feeding babies and children and must meet certain standards. While industrial powdered milk is mostly used in the production of food, medicine and animal feed.
  2. Additives: In industrial powdered milk, additives and preservatives may be used to increase the useful life of the product, while edible powdered milk is usually produced without chemical additives.
  3. Production process: In the production of industrial powdered milk, more advanced equipment and technologies are used, which help in large-scale production and offer a more controlled quality.

Both edible and industrial powdered milk are useful products that have different production processes according to their different uses. Knowing these differences helps consumers and producers to choose the right product and improve the quality of nutrition.
